I’ve been thinking about purchasing a dresser for a while now. My closet is on the small side, so I thought I needed a dresser to hold all of my clothes.
Turns out, I just needed to get rid of some of my stuff!
After spending several hours cleaning, dusting, and hauling out donations, I finally realized that my current storage space, while not as large as I’d like, is perfectly sufficient.
Decluttering has also helped me take an inventory of some of my stuff:
- 20 pairs of shoes
- 63 books
- 16 purses / handbags
- 25 pairs of earrings
- 8 bottles of moisturizer
- 5 foundations (liquid + powder)
- more dresses/skirts than I care to count
And all of the above is counted after I’ve finished cleaning/organizing.
Whenever I’m watching HGTV, one refrain that I hear from home buyers is that they need more space. I hope that when I’m ready to buy a home, I’ll remember that it’s a lot cheaper to get rid of stuff than to buy a bigger place!
I had similar issues when I moved from the Midwest to the south. I had to get rid of a lot of stuff….however, I wish I had a second tube of mascara and some more lotion
Wow…you have inspired me to start de-cluttering myself!!
did u send some of your stuff to goodwill? it’s very spiritually cleansing to do that kind of stuff too.
So true! The most home I want is a tiny ~900 square foot condominium… I’m sure a lot of people can’t imagine having that little of space, but I have maybe a couple hundred square feet over that amount now and it’s much too much for just the two of us! I actually like my hubby, so having a comfy, cozy space works.
I’ve been flip flopping on giving my Mom the desk she gave me and getting a smaller one, but my husband thinks I should keep it… It’s great for storage, but I also keep a lot of junk in it.
I ought to donate the stuff that is STILL sitting in the boxes I moved it down here in when I moved in a year and a half ago…
I remember at my old house I thought I needed a new dresser as well because I ended up having clothes all over the floor because they wouldn’t fit in any of the drawers. I decided to go through them all and ended up getting rid of 3/4 of stuff and then had an extra empty drawer in my dresser! It’s a great feeling to get rid of clutter.
Very cool. I love decluttering and clearing up space. It’s both cheap and produces such a Zen feeling!
Totally! I love getting rid of stuff, especially when I realize I haven’t used it in a long time.
My wife has as much stuff as you described after purging and donating a bunch of stuff. Her decluttering isn’t insurance she won’t amass more stuff but at least our house looks a lot cleaner. I’m hoping the cleanout will lead to less trips to the mall.

No doubt. sometimes i walk around our townhouse looking for things to take off the wall or shelves to then sell on Craigslist or eBay. it’s really fun, you should try it.
That’s why I purged so much. It helped show me that I could even take it a bit further and to be careful about what I buy from now on….
