I’d rather be happy. At least in a couple of cases.
First, I’m increasing my $2,000/month budget by $100 to $200 a month - eating out with friends, going on day trips (and vacations) and buying new dresses really do make me feel better, even though they might be not the “right” thing to do for a pf blogger.
I am still saving at least 25% of my gross income (including bonuses & tax refunds it’ll be closer to 30%) towards retirement and shorter-term savings. So I’ll never get featured on CNN’s Extreme Savers, but I’m a-okay with that.
Second, I am practicing just being happy with CB, because he makes me really happy, so much so that I’d subconsciously pick fights just to protect myself from what-if. But that’s got to stop. I’m going to pray, enjoy, and let go of the past hurts I’ve been holding on to as an insurance policy… one that says, see, it’s dangerous to be so happy.
It’s going to take practice… but practice makes perfect, right?
I think your new idea of still saving a ton (WAYYYY more than me!) but allowing yourself more little pleasures is really going to pay off. These are your twenties and you have a great life - enjoy it!
And, oh, the picking fights for no reason! Ugh, I could just kick myself for how many times I’ve done that with Mark. I’m working on it though, and I’m a lot happier.
I like this post, it’s almost as if I can FEEL the happiness.
I agree! Go out with friends, Have fun!
I’ve been trying the same thing in my life. Happiness is important!
As much as I love being right, being happy is much more valuable.
I’ve been thinking of upping my budget slightly as well next month. This month I had “extra” money and it felt so nice!
I agree with the previous commenters - I think saving 25-30% of your income is fantastic. If you still have more money to increase your “happiness fund,” then go for it!
That’s awesome, and good for you! I agree: 25% is no small sum, friend.
It’s probably to your advantage to find a balance between saving and living. You don’t want to miss out on an event because you are too focused on the future…….don’t allow today to pass you by as you prepare for tomorrow……
No sense in living like a monk for no reason!
I’ve had to do the same thing recently. I’m still saving 15% for retirement, paying off my (now small!) student loan and saving some every month for my downpayment & emergencies; I’m just upping my “fun money” so I don’t have to deprive myself of new clothes, dinners out, etc. Here’s to living a little!
Happiness is definitely a fantastic thing. I feel happy knowing that I will be paying off my debt soon and that means far more to me than having new clothes etc. However, if you feel you need a few more things to make you happy, then go for it, as long as you are still paying off your debts and saving a bit you can stay smug!
Why choose? Have both…which I think you are doing. Bravo!
