Not well enough, is what I concluded after I read this article from the NY Magazine.
When I ordered food last night, I gave the delivery man $15 for a $13 tab. But it probably wouldn’t have hurt me to give him a $3 tip instead.

15 dollars on 13 dollars? I think you made a typo.
I usually give a couple bucks no matter what the cost of my food is…unless the roads are treacherous.
Wow! I usually give a 20% tip for delivery food (just like a waitor), but now I’m reconsidering…
SavingDiva, we tip 20% on delivery, too. The way I look at it, a delivery person probably spends more dedicated time on us than a waiter does anyway.
I should say, at least 20%. We add on 20% then round up to the next dollar.
I usually give $2-$3 no matter what the price of the meal is (it’s usually $10-$15). So I guess that’s 20%, though I wouldn’t increase my tip if I happened to order a $25 meal. The delivery person doesn’t do more work just because I order more expensive food. Though if it was raining or if I ordered food for a large group then I would probably tip at least $5.
I always tip at least 20% and then round up to the nearest dollar (like S/100/30). I live in a 6th floor walkup, and so I usually even tip a bit more (closer to 25%), since they have to walk up 5 flights of stairs.
On a related note, one time I ordered furniture from K-Mart and asked to have it delivered. They said it would cost me $20. I explained (several times) that the piece I ordered would require about 3 men to carry, and that they’d have to get it up 5 flights of (narrow) stairs. The lady said, “Oh, don’t worry, honey. We won’t charge you extra.”
I was disgusted, and tipped the three men $120 ($40 each). I couldn’t believe that K-Mart expected their workers to split $20 among the three of them to carry a huge piece of furniture up 5 flights of stairs. (And that’s assuming that the workers even get the full $20 delivery fee to begin with.) My friends make fun of me for overtipping, but I think it was well worth it to spend the money in that instance.
Peachy - I meant I gave him $15 total for a $13 tab, so $2 tip on $13. I give more sometimes… but never have I felt SO generous that I’d give someone a $15 tip for a $13 bill.
Gotcha. ha ha. I was thinking ‘that’s awfully nice of you.’
